Solar energy for Hannah’s place of safety

Hannah’s place of safety.

In May 2023, we were approached by a client reaching out for a comparative solar and inverter quote for a domestic installation in Westgate , Mitchell’s plain, Cape Town.

The client mentioned that the place was some kind of creche and roughly described that, “They look after kids.”

Upon arrival at the site, we then realized that this was no ordinary home. After a quick meet and greet with the homeowner, Deon, I was lead through a large, seemingly normal home to the electrical distribution board in the garage.

As I walked through the home, all I could hear was the cooing and babbling of babies from all corners and caregivers could be seen nursing and feeding babies by hand.

After my usual electrical inspection and questions regarding their electrical consumption as per usual, I asked the home owner Deon, what kind of business is this?” Is this a creche?’

“What time do the kids leave? “, I enquired.

I need to establish your battery requirements for overnight use

No, my friend, he replied. This is no creche. We look after orphans.

Like an orphanage, I asked.

Like abandoned babies that need extra care rather than an orphanage, he responded.

Every day we receive babies that have no one to care for them. We look after them until they can be placed with an orphanage or foster family.

As I looked around, my amusement at the cute clusters of babies packed side by side in their cots like keys on a piano turned to pity and sorrow. I knew we had to help.

We could not make a profit off such an organization.

We then offered to come to their aid by negotiating the best possible discounts from our suppliers and offered to supply and install all the equipment at cost prices as the system was being sponsored by another generous donor.

We installed an 8 kva Deye inverter with 2 x Volta stage 1 batteries.

8 x 500-watt JA solar panels and handled all the SSEG small scale electricity generation requirements with the city of Cape Town so that Hannah’s Place of Safety could save as much money as possible and put their resources to better use caring for these abandoned babies rather than prepaid electricity.
